Maldives Bans Is_ráéli Passports Holders from Entering Maldives

The government of the Maldives has announced a ban on Israeli visitors due to growing public concern over the situation in Gaza. Known for its stunning white sand beaches and luxury resorts, the Indian Ocean archipelago will no longer welcome travelers with Israeli passports.

President Mohamed Muizzu declared the ban and launched a fundraising campaign called “Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine.” This move comes as a response to the increasing public pressure and the political climate in the Maldives. Last year, around 11,000 Israelis visited the Maldives, but this year, the number of Israeli tourists has dropped significantly.

The decision to ban Israeli visitors has been influenced by both opposition parties and allies within the government who have been urging President Muizzu to take a stand. They believe that this ban is a necessary step to show solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

In light of this new policy, an Israeli foreign ministry spokesman has advised Israelis currently in the Maldives to consider leaving the country. This advisory aims to ensure the safety and well-being of Israeli nationals amidst the changing political landscape.

It is important to note that the Maldives is not the only country to impose such restrictions. Israeli passport holders are also banned from entering several other countries, reflecting broader geopolitical tensions in the region.

The Maldives’ decision underscores the impact of international conflicts on global travel and tourism. For a country that heavily relies on tourism, this ban represents a significant shift. The Maldives has long been a popular destination for tourists from around the world, including Israelis. However, the rising public sentiment regarding the Gaza situation has led to this dramatic policy change.

In addition to the travel ban, the fundraising campaign initiated by President Muizzu aims to support the Palestinian people. The campaign, titled “Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine,” seeks to gather financial aid to help those affected by the conflict. This effort is part of a broader initiative to align the Maldives with international support for Palestine.

The situation in Gaza has elicited strong reactions globally, and the Maldives is now positioning itself as a supporter of the Palestinian cause. This move is likely to resonate with many Maldivians who have expressed their solidarity with Palestinians.
